Fangio Trattoria: The Leslieville Italian Spot the Locals Are Quietly Gatekeeping

May 4, 2026
Tucked into Leslieville on Queen Street East, Fangio Trattoria is the kind of Italian spot the locals are quietly gatekeeping — and after one dinner, I understood why. Authentic flavours, modern touches, generous portions, and a carbonara worth coming back ten times for.

There's a certain kind of restaurant that the regulars don't want you to know about. The kind that sits unassumingly on a busy stretch of street, doesn't beg for your attention, and lets the food do all the talking. Fangio Trattoria on Queen Street East is exactly that kind of spot — and after one dinner, I understood why the locals have been quietly keeping it to themselves.

This was easily some of the best and freshest Italian food I've had in a long time. Authentic at its core, but with modern flavour notes layered in. Generous portions for the price point. And the kind of small, comfortable space that makes you feel like you've been let in on a secret.

The Vibe

Fangio is tucked into Leslieville at 1111 Queen Street East, a neighbourhood that's quietly become one of Toronto's most exciting food corridors. The concept itself is rooted in something special — the restaurant is named after Juan Manuel Fangio, the legendary Argentinian Formula 1 driver, and that influence shows up in subtle ways on the menu. The kitchen leans into Italian tradition with occasional Argentinian flourishes that give the dishes more depth and boldness than your standard trattoria fare.

The space is intimate. Small but not cramped, warm but not overdone — the kind of room where you can actually hear your dinner companion and the lighting flatters everyone at the table. It feels lived-in. Like a neighbourhood spot that knows exactly what it is.

What I Ordered

The Starters

We opened with the house-made focaccia and burrata alongside the arancini, and I have to be honest — the arancini didn't last five minutes at our table. Crispy on the outside, molten on the inside, packed with so much flavour I was genuinely sad when it was gone. The kind of bite that makes you understand why arancini, when done properly, is a religion.

The focaccia and burrata was the perfect counterpart. Pillowy, well-seasoned bread with that creamy, milky burrata pull. A simple plate, but one that's almost impossible to get wrong when the ingredients are this fresh.

The Pastas

This is where Fangio really shows off.

The handmade pasta with ragu had this sweet, zesty top note balanced against the deep, slow-simmered richness of meat that's clearly been on the stove for hours. You can taste the time in it.

But my personal favourite — the dish I'd come back ten times for — was the carbonara. Creamy, rich, and absolutely worth every bite. Every forkful had this perfect contrast: the crunch of salty cured pork, that velvety cream coating, and perfectly cooked spaghetti with that bouncy, just-right bite that only comes from fresh pasta done correctly. It was the kind of carbonara that ruins other carbonaras for you.

What to Expect If You're Going

If you're planning to head to Fangio, here's what I'd want to know before walking in:

Make a reservation. It's a small space and the locals have caught on. You can book directly through their website at fangio.ca — don't roll up on a Friday night without a table.

Come hungry. The portions are genuinely generous, especially considering the price point. You'll want room for an appetizer, pasta, and ideally a glass of something Italian.

Order the arancini. This isn't a suggestion. Whatever else you do, get the arancini.

Don't sleep on the carbonara. It's not the flashiest item on the menu, but it's the one I'd put my name on.

Bring someone you actually want to talk to. The space is intimate and made for real conversation — this isn't a high-energy, scene-y spot. It's for the people who care more about the food and the company than the photo op.

Embrace the neighbourhood. Leslieville is worth wandering before or after.

The Verdict

Fangio Trattoria is the kind of restaurant I want to return to before I've even left. Authentic Italian roots, modern execution, fair pricing, and a warm room — it's a rare combination, especially in a city where so many spots prioritize aesthetic over substance.

This one delivers on both, but it's the food that brings you back.

If you're an Italian food lover in the GTA, put Fangio on your list. And then maybe keep it a little quiet — the locals will appreciate it.
